"Free Sewing Machine No.#5

I have never heard of this company. But I did some research and found out it was made in Rockford Illinois. I can't tell how old it is cause there is no serial numbers anywhere on the machine. But it looks very similar to the one Ed L has on his blogspot. I am referreing to his Singer 15-125. I wish there was a place I could start an album of all my old sewing machine pictures. I will see if I can put it on this blogspot.
I welcome any comments on this subject. Thanks.

  1. We just picked up a #5 today at the local thrift store for about $25. I immediately started scouring the web trying to find information on this machine. The closest I came was a site with some company history and some old-time ads. (I was able to identify the cabinet as the model no. 560)

    www.ismacs.net/free/home.html

This site has the company history:
    www.geocities.com/claw.geo/free.html
there are links at the bottom of the page for diagrams, parts lists, etc. but as of now I can't seem to get to any of them. The site is dated 2001, so we just may be out of luck with those.

I'm trying to find a source that will let me date the serial number. The serial number on mine is on the base. When looking straight down at the machine from above, it would be the "upper" right corner.

I'm bookmarking this page and if I find any other information on this machine, I'll post it.

  3. Hi madman 459,
I took a closer look after wiping away the grime- and I found the serial # in the back under the motor. It is: C29204. Still trying to find a shuttle for it as it is missing. I am thinking Ed L helped me identify my Free # 5 as identical to the Singer #127, so I downloaded a manual for the Singer #127 so at least I could have that info. Now, to just get a shuttle, so I can see if it even sews or not! I priced them at one online store and they run $39.95 + s/h and I don't know if that is a reasonable price or not. I left a question for Ed L, and hope he writes back before I spend that much unnecessarily.
Keep posted. and let me know if you find out anything. THANKS.
    Phyllis
